Introduction

Creatine Phosphokinase-Muscle Band or CPK-MB test is a pathological examination done by drawing blood from a patient’s vein suspected to have had myocardial infarction, commonly called a heart attack. It is typically done in a hospital to test the possibility of damage to the heart muscle. However, other tests can be performed to determine possible damage to the heart muscle.

About CPK-MB

The CPK-MB (Creatine Phosphokinase-MB) is a blood test that measures the levels of this enzyme, which is primarily found in heart muscle. It detects heart muscle damage—such as a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or inflammation (myocarditis)—by identifying when the enzyme leaks into the bloodstream. Its importance has, however, been reduced to some extent as more specific tests like Troponin T or Troponin I are now available, which are increasingly being used to identify acute myocardial infarction or Ischemic injury. CPK-MB is still used as an additional test, especially in cases where recurrent myocardial infarction is suspected. Troponin T is more confirmatory and more specific for cardiac muscle injury.
